Chicago Ballet Conservatory

Founded in July, 2016, Chicago Ballet Conservatory (CBC) is an upper level, in-house classical ballet training and performing program of Mohler Dance Academy. CBC provides a structured, multi-leveled pre-professional curriculum designed to maximize the potential of each dancer. We are uniquely committed to the beautiful art form of ballet and are passionate about guiding and shaping the technical and mental approach to the discipline.

Chicago Ballet Conservatory emphasizes both physical mastery as well as artistic expression, equipping dancers with the skills to succeed in a professional environment. Whether used as a foundational training program to maximize proficiency in other genres, or as a platform to become a member of a professional ballet company, the lessons learned at CBC will positively benefit each student.

Leveraging the Vaganova and ABT training methods, our master instructors impart unsurpassed technical execution and performance quality. Students advancing through the curriculum will be challenged and encouraged, delivering the educational elements required to tackle increasingly progressive components such as pointe work, partner work, and advanced variations. We also believe aspiring professional dancers need multiple performing experiences to best prepare them for the dance world.

We are thrilled you are here and thank you for entrusting us with the development of your dancer!

By invitation only, these students have typically completed Ballet 1 within Mohler Dance Academy and have demonstrated an ability to work at a more focused and accelerated pace. Students are selected based on natural technique and focus level. Students study at least one day per week.

By invitation only, these students have typically completed Ballet 2 within Mohler Dance Academy or have graduated from CBC Intro level. Students have demonstrated an ability to work at a more focused and accelerated pace. Students are required to study at least two days per week.

CBC offers classes 7 days per week for both intermediate and advanced levels. Students typically study at least 5 days per week. In addition to daily classes in ballet technique and pointe, CBC offers weekly character, weekly variations and partnering opportunities. In addition to adhering to a strict classical ballet schedule, most students train in other genres of dance as a complement to ballet.

Level placement is carefully considered by our faculty in order to best support and nurture the development of each individual dancer. Dancers and parents are expected to respect the decisions of our faculty and conduct themselves in a manner that is both positive and supportive.

CBC is excited to offer a variety of performance opportunities throughout the year. This includes the staging of full length ballets, excerpts from ballet productions, original works and variations from classical repertoire. In our first year alone, our dancers were given the opportunity to perform in over 6 stage performances including Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and more. Our 2017 Nutcracker production features professional dancers from New York City Ballet, ABT, Joffrey Ballet and Bolshoi Brazil.

Select students have the opportunity to participate in world-renowned competitions such as Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). Most YAGP dancers are coached privately by members of our faculty to prepare solo variations for competition. Some students compete in additional categories such as contemporary as a soloist or as an ensemble member.

CBC was proud to post the following results from its inaugural YAGP competition year:

    New York Finalist
    1st, 2nd and 3rd place rankings in Chicago semi-finals
    (5) Top 12 semi-finalists
    (2) Top 24 semi-finalists

Private lessons are available to CBC students to work on specific developmental areas and/or to train for competitions. Private lesson rates and studio availability can be coordinated through our studio director.

In the summer of 2017, CBC launched a 7 week intensive program in which students trained 6-8 hours per day Monday through Friday. Local as well as national guest instructors and choreographers worked with CBC staff to offer classes in ballet, pointe, variations, partnering, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip hop and more! The summer culminated with a stage performance that included excerpts from Swan Lake as well a variety of original works set during intensive classes.

Look for information in the spring for our 2018 Summer Intensive.
